He was educated at Harrow School and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he read mathematics. His interest in the text of the New Testament led him to study Syriac manuscripts and to publish widely in the field. He was a fellow of the British Academy. He introduced the bronze medals for presentation by the Academy to scholars in recognition of special service to Biblical Studies.
