William Henry Burleigh (Born at Woodstock, Feb. 2, 1812; died at Brooklyn, New York, March 18, 1871) was a self-educated genius, who led a checkered career as farmer, printer, journalist, lawyer, and public lecturer on slavery and other topics. He resided much at Plainfield, and was at one time editor of the "Charter Oak," pubished at Hartford. He printed a volume of poems at Philadelphia in 1841. They are fair specimens of the better class of newspaper poetry of their period, and in their facililty and sentiment somewhat resemble the poems of Prentice.

NOTE: There is a discrepency in various biographies on William Henry Burleigh/Burley. One states he died in 1863. The others all give the date listed here. He was also on the 1870 Census record, married to his second wife, Celia Burr.
