US Congressman, US Senator. He was elected to represent first Pennsylvania 7th District, then its 6th District, in the United States House of Representatives, serving first from 1941 to 1945, then from 1947 to 1959 (he served two years during World War II as a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy). In 1958 he was elected as a Senator from Pennsylvania to the United States Senate, serving from 1959 to 1977. He served as the Republican leader in the Senate during the Watergate years, and represented Pennsylvania in Congress, as a House member and Senator for 36 years. He announced he would not run for re-election in 1976 under the cloud of a senate investigation into allegations he had received illegal cash contributions from Gulf Oil Compnay. On August 7,1974 Senator Scott, Senator Barry Goldwater of Arizona and House Minority Leader John Rhodes went to the White House to tell President Richard Nixon his position was hopeless-that pehaps only four senators would vote against convicting him. Two days later, President Nixon resigned.
