Composer and conductor. Born and raised in Naples, he intitially studied under the tuteluge of his father, before travelling to England in 1832, where he settled. He became the first master of the art of conducting in England with a baton, the direction of the orchestra having been previously affected by the first violinist. He gained fame and distinction and was much admired by Verdi for his professionalism and influence. He was conductor of the Philharmonic Society and in 1869, was knighted by Queen Victoria in recognition of his achievments.
