Major League Baseball Player. For 13 seasons, he played right field for the Kansas City Royals (1974 to 1979), California Angels (1980), Detroit Tigers (1980 to 1981), and the Seattle Mariners (1982 to 1986). He made his major league debut on April 6, 1974 with the Kansas City Royals. His most productive season came three years later, when he batted .312 with 23 home runs and 112 RBI, earned a Gold Glove, and finished second to Rod Carew in balloting for the American League Most Valuable Player Award. On May 8, 1979 he became involved in a notable feud with Chicago White Sox reliever Ed Farmer at Comiskey Park in Chicago, Illinois, when a pitch thrown by Farmer in the top of the 5th inning hit him, fracturing his jaw and breaking several teeth, and caused him to miss 21 games. The next season on June 20, 1980 while playing for the Detroit Tigers, he hit an infield grounder against Farmer at Comiskey Park. While Farmer watched his infielder make the play, he ran to the pitcher's mound and tackled Farmer from behind, instead of running to first base, and managed to get in several punches before the benches cleared and the two were separated. He was suspended for seven games and a warrant was issued for his arrest in Illinois, forcing him to skip the remainder of the series. Later, Farmer agreed to drop the charges in exchange for a handshake, and the two players brought out the lineup cards before the game on September 1, 1980. During his Major League Baseball career, he appeared in 1,584 games and hit .270 with 108 home runs and 717 runs batted in. He died of a heart attack at the age of 50.
