John was a son of Ann (Bywater) and William Cluett. He had 6 siblings: Frederick Henry, Emily Ann, George Bywater, Edmund, Robert & Mary Harris. On July 19, 1850 his parents came to America from England with all of the children except for Emily. His father opened a book and piano store in Troy, NY and in 1857 John joined with his father. In 1852 he worked for Maullin & Blanchard, manufacturer of collars and cuffs. His brother, George came to work as a clerk at Maullin & Blanchard in 1854. His father opened a book and piano store in Troy, NY (William Cluett & Son) and in 1857 John joined with his father. In 1862, John went back to Maullin & Blanchard and the firm was reoganzied due to the death of the senior partner there, to the title of 'George B. Cluett, Bro.s & Co. John had dissolved his partnership with his father at the same time. The firm was located at 254 Eighth St. in Troy. Their brother, Robert also came in to the business as a clerk in 1862. The business became a huge success in making fine shirts and they also had at least 3 patents which were known to the best in the trade of the U.S.
John married Elizabeth 'Lizzie' Bontecou. They had 7 children and only 2 survived. They were Jessie A. and Louisa.
He predeceased Elizabeth by 11 years.
John's place of residence at the time of his death was in Troy, NY and he died from 'Nephritis'.
