From 1952 on he worked for the British occupation authorities as a translator. In 1955 he published his first novel "UFO am Nachthimmel" (UFO in the night sky) under a British pseudonym because he thought he could be successful in the genre of science fiction only as an English author.
Other novels which were written under the pseudonym Clark Darlton are, among others, "Raum ohne Zeit" (area without time 1957) and a trilogy about a galactic war. He was also a founding member of the Science Fiction Club Germany, having served as Chairman for some time.
In 1961 with his friend Karl-Herbert Scheer he invented Perry Rhodan series, in which a variable number of authors co-wrote and still write. He published in the Perry Rhodan series 192 books, 26 paperback books and 32 novels.
In 1981 he moved to Ireland but weakened by illness he returned to Salzburg to live near his son. After his death an asteroid was named after him; (15 265) Ernsting.
