Hall of Fame Professional Baseball Pioneer. Born John W. Jackson, he was the first professional black ballplayer, beginning his career in 1878, as a pitcher with Worcester of the New England Association. As the first African-American in professional baseball before the color lines were drawn, he changed his name to Bud Fowler when he signed to play in white leagues in 1885, with Keokuk in the Western League. He could play every position and played for twenty different teams, changing teams frequently not because of his playing ability, but rather his race. When the color line became established in 1894, he organized the Page Fence Giants, an all-black team sponsored by the Page Woven Wire Fence Company of Adrian, Michigan. This establishment led to the foundation of the Negro League teams in which he played and managed until his death. He was posthumously elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame on December 5, 2021 and is part of the Hall of Fame Class of 2022.
