Hall of Fame Major League Baseball Player. As a shortstop, his lifetime batting average of .318 is second only to Honus Wagner's .329 average. He led the National League in 1935 with a .385 average while playing with the Pirates. A hard out, he struck out only 276 times in 6,622 career at bats. He led the league in stolen bases with 20 in 1943 when he played for the Dodgers. His election to the Baseball Hall of Fame finally came in 1985.
