Alvin Allison 'Al' Carmines, Jr.
Clergyman who marshaled his gifts as a showman, composer, singer, and actor to turn the sanctuary of a Greenwich Village church, Judson Memorial Church, into a riveting avant-garde stage that helped to start the off-off-Broadway revolt against mainstream theater in the '60s. Carmines won five Obie awards, one of them for lifetime achievement. He died in New York City on August 9, 2005.
