Major League Baseball Player. He was a right-handed pitcher in the Negro Leagues when he made his Major League debut for the Brooklyn Dodgers on May 1, 1952. For six seasons, he played for the Brooklyn Dodgers 1952 to 1955, Cincinnati Reds in 1956 and Washington Senators in 1957. In 1952, he won National League Rookie of the Year Award and was also noted for being the first African American pitcher to win a World Series game. He ended his career with 30 wins, 12 loss, 222 strikeouts and a 3.91 earned run average. On 9/20/1953 he was recorded throwing a fastball 93.2 mph over the plate, or 102.2 mph the way modern pitches are measured, making him one of the fastest pitchers in history. After baseball, he taught health and physical education and later became an executive with Greyhound Bus Corporation.
