George R. Clarke joined the 113th IL Vol. Infantry on 07 Aug 1862. He mustered into service in Co. A, on 01 Oct 1862, as their Captain. He was promoted to Major and transferred to the 113th's Staff, where he was again promoted, finishing the Civil War as a Lieutenant Colonel.
Influenced by his wife, Sarah, he opened a ministry in Chicago in 1877, which moved to the former location of the Pacific Beer Garden in 1880. The site was renamed the Pacific Garden Mission. This ministry is still active today.
