James Henry Hysell was born on Sept. 14, 1837 at Middleport, Ohio to John Crooks and Sally (Radford) Hysell.

He attended the Ohio Medical College in Cincinnati and received his medical degree from the University of Buffalo, New York in 1861.

He married Mary L. Hayslip on Dec. 22, 1864 at Guyandotte, West Virginia. Their children were Francis Henry and Nellie Hysell.

Dr. Hysell was a Major in the Union Army during the Civil War and remained through the Spanish American War.

He was an aide to President McKinley and Chief surgeon of the 2nd Division of the First Army Corps. He was the chief medical distribution officer at Santiago, Cuba during the Spanish American War.

His death in 1905 was partially due to complications from chronic malaria.

James Henry is survived by his wife, Mary; and a son, Francis Henry Hysell.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his daughter, Nellie Hysell.
