Mrs. Southworth, writer, dies at 92
Mrs. Gertrude Van Duyn Southworth, 92, of 307 Rugby Road, writer of several history text books and former president of the Iroquois Publishing Co., died yesterday in a local nursing home after a long illness.
Mrs. Southworth, born in Syracuse, was a graduate of Kedle School and attended Evelyn College in New Jersey. She was the widow of Edward Franklin Southworth, who founded the Iroquois Publishing Co. of Syracuse in 1915. Upon his death in 1946 she became president of the company.
She authors The Story of the Empire State, Builders of our Country, in two volunes, and co-authored 14 other text books with her son, John Van Duyn Southworth.
Mrs. Southworth was active in the Thrift Kitchen, which later beacme the Home Bureau, the Community Chest and the Salvation Army. She was a member of the American League of Penwomen, and has been listed in Who's Who in America.
She is survived by her son, John Van Duyn Southworth of Fayetteville; two daughters, Mrs. Richard D. Jackson of Tampa Fla., and Mrs. George R. Eiler; eight grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at the Fairchild and Meech DeWitt Chapet, 3609 Erie Blvd. East, the Rev. Alexander Charmichel officiating. Burial wil be in Oakwood Cemetery.
There will be no calling hours. Contributions may be made to the Van Dyne County Hospital.
