"Benjamin Dean was calculated to have been born on the 16th of October, 1777, in Dutchess County, New York, the likely son of Benjamin 1739-1815 and Ruth [Tanner] Dean 1740-1812. Benjamin was a farmer, pioneer, father of at least 7 children and among the first settlers of Richland County, Ohio. It appears he was born in Dutchess County, New York or less possibly, Pennsylvania. He is reported in 6 different US Census to have been born in New York and 3 others claim Pennsylvania. Several clues suggest Benjamin was born in Dutchess County, New York, and another, Chenango County, New York. To date, we have found no solid evidence to confirm the exact location of birth. It seems Benjamin 1777 possibly had a falling out with the family in Connecticut over political differences and contact was severed by miles and years. Benjamin 1777 seems to be the only child born in New York, as it is suspected he was born there while his father was helping one of his brothers develop his farm at the time there in Dutchess County, New York. Benjamin, born 1777, was seemingly forgotten in family affairs and not made mention of in the William Dean family manuscripts as the authors, B.S. & J.E. Dean, probably had no information or knowledge of their great, great uncle. I am in perpetual search for any scrap of evidence to link Benjamin 1777 with his alleged father, Benjamin 1739. For now they are linked until someone can prove otherwise. My research indicates Benjamin's first marriage was to Henrietta, maiden name, dates and locations still unknown to me. At least a couple children were born of this union, I am convinced it was Matthias 1805 and Jonathan 1808-1864. I would guess Henrietta died young, leaving Benjamin a widower but have nothing on this for dates and locations at this time.* I have records that indicate Henrietta was the mother of both Matthias and Jonathan. Both of these brothers also named their daughters, HENRIETTA. Benjamin was married to Ruth [Barnes] Soper, (also found in records spelled Loaper/Loper) about 1811, probably in Pennsylvania or maybe Jefferson County, Ohio - exact date and location are so far, unknown. Records indicate that Benjamin had at least two sons prior to this marriage; Matthias Dean 1805-1864, married Boadicea "Boe" Gibbs 1814-1853; and Jonathan Dean 1808-1864, married Maria Dunn 1812-1890. Ruth Barnes was previously married to John Soper, who died 1809 in Maryland. They had a son, Nelson B. Soper, born 1805 and a daughter, Mary Ann Soper, born 1807. Mary Ann is found listed along with seven other siblings in Benjamin Dean's Will, Richland County, Ohio, in 1852, confirming these family members being linked. Benjamin & Ruth Dean had five more children; Lucinda Dean 1812-1890, 1st married Thomas Andrews 1808-1874, 2nd married Isaac Hunter 1812-1899; John T. Dean 1815-1888, married Sarah Jane Parke 1819-1888; Benjamin W. Dean 1816-1871, married Mary Jane Hartford 1821-1886; Elizabeth C. Dean, born 1 September, 1818, married Hugh Cooper on the 13th of November, 1835, in Richland County, Ohio; and James Hanson Dean 1820-1888, married Margaret Ritchie 1823-1909. Benjamin died on the 29th of April, 1852, in Washington township, Richland County, Ohio, aged 74 years, 6 months and 13 days. Source: dates inscribed on tombstone. I would love any additional information or clues about this family, however small. I also collect information and family group sheets for all the very old Dean families that I know of in America. I am always glad to add, correct or discuss. Thanks in advance for checking around!

**** Some excellent research has been done and new facts & clues have been discovered and added by my distant cousin John Plambeck who is also a direct decendant of Benjamin. See below;

"It is known that Benjamin Dean and his wife Ruth (Barnes) Dean sold land in Richland County as early as 1815 and bought land in 1824 in Richland County. We have done extensive research and cannot as yet positively prove a relationship between Benjamin b. 1739 and Benjamin b. 1777: IT CANNOT BE DISPROVED EITHER. More current information became available which eliminated a lead from Jefferson County. Dean family history mentions six children of Benjamin b. 1739 while in another area it mentions seven--a little flutter in the numbers if you will. There are seven baptisms of children born to Benjamin b. 1739 in Cornwall. Using those dates and the 1790 US Census (which started in August of 1790) on that Census one should find only one male child under 16 and there are TWO, which seems to make EIGHT children with one not baptised in Connecticut. Using the baptismal dates to check the rate at which they were having children, there is a gap of five years, Benjamin b. 1777 is a perfect fit for the rate and was born in New York. There several documented links in Dutchess, NY to Benjamin b. 1739 and his wife Ruth as well as several reasons for them to have been in Dutchess, NY in 1777. I believe Benjamin b. 1777 is the second male child under 16 listed on the 1790 Census. I believe I have found him in Vermont in 1800 as well. We need only another record positively prove it."

"The DAR has an application for membership as well as presenting the State of Ohio an Official Roster (clearly labeled Not for Geanology Purposes) which puports that Lucinda's grandfather, Benjamin Dean b. 1739, was in the American Revolution. These applications are disproved by my research: One of those Benjamin Dean's was a son of Moses Dean, while the one from Ludingtons Regt. is not even related--the proof is absolute."
