Hall of Fame Major League Baseball Umpire. Born in Chicago, Illinois, he played in the semi-leagues but never as a professional. In 1906, he was employed by the American League at age 22 making him the youngest umpire ever in the Major Leagues. He served on the umpire staff through 1927 and officiated in six World Series. From 1927 to 1935, he was General Manager of the Cleveland Indians, Farm director of the Boston Red Sox 1936 to 1940, President of the Southern Association 1942 to 1946 and General Manager of the Detroit Tigers 1947 to 1951. He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame by the Committee on Baseball Veterans on January 28, 1973.
