Marie R. Sommer, 101, formerly of 234 18th St. NW, died Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003, in Heritage Nursing and Rehab Center following a long illness. Services: 10 a.m. today. Turner West Funeral Home. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery. The Rev. Steven Rosonke of St. Patrick's Catholic Church will officiate.
Marie is survived by four daughters, Marie Pegariek, Barbara Campbell, Henrietta Maher and Margaret (Tom) Van-Woert, all of Cedar Rapids; 19 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; 12 brothers and sisters; a son, George; a grandson, Donald Jayne; and two great-grandsons.
Marie was born Oct. 13, 1902, the beloved daughter of Martin and Mary Moll Krabacher, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Marie married Henry Sommer on Jan. 17, 1922, in Fairfax. He died May 29, 1932.
Marie worked at the Wright Aeronautical Corp. in Cincinnati, Ohio, during World War II before returning to Cedar Rapids, where she worked at the Paramount Theatre and Quaker Oats. Marie retired from Quaker Oats in 1967. She was a longtime member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
Marie was a devoted mother, grandmother and friend and will be deeply missed.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 516 A Ave. NW, Cedar Rapids, IA, in Marie's name.
