U.S. Senator. During World War I, he served overseas as a 1st Lieutenant the U.S. Army (1917-19). After the war, he graduated from Hamilton College in 1920 and engaged in the insurance businesses in New York City (1920-30). He was a member of the New York State Assembly (1930-46), chairman of New York State Temporary Commission Against Discrimination (1944-45). Member of the board of trustees of Hamilton College and Cornell University and dean of the New York State School of Industrial and Labor Relations (1945-47). In 1947, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, serving until 1959. Declining to seek reelection, he resumed his previous business interests until his death.
