U.S. Senator. He graduated from Harvard University in 1896, studied law at Columbia Law School, New York City, was admitted to the bar and commenced the practice of law in Portland, Maine, in 1899. He was a member of the Maine State House of Representatives, (1905-06) and a member of the Republican National Committee, (1912-16). In 1917, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, serving until 1941. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he retired to private life until his death at age 88.
