The Rev Dr W Russell Bowie was the husband of Jean Laverack Bowie and the son of Walter Bowie and Elizabeth Branch, according to his death certificate. The death informant is listed as Jean Evans.

W Russell Bowie graduated from Harvard in 1904, where he and classmate Franklin Delano Roosevelt co-edited the Harvard Crimson. He married Jean Laverack in 1909 in Buffalo, NY. The Rev Dr Bowie served as rector of St Paul's Episcopal Church in Richmond from 1911 to 1923. He then led Grace Episcopal Church in New York City from 1923 to 1939, before joining the faculty of Union Theological Seminary. In 1950 he joined the faculty of Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria. He lived on campus during his latter years.

During a long and distinguished career, the Rev Dr Bowie also wrote many books, and served on the editorial boards for the Interpreter's Bible and the Revised Standard Version of the Bible.

A newspaper obituary shows that the Rev Dr Bowie passed away at Alexandria Hospital, and was survived by two daughters and one son.
