Pioneers Celebrate 65th Wedding

Mr. and Mrs. August Poser, grand old couple of Homestead township, will celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary next Tuesday. Mr. Poser is 86 and his wife is 85. Their marriage took place in Leipzig, Germany on February 15, 1879 and they came to this country during the same year. They settled in Milwaukee and resided there for three years before coming westward to this community, where they filed a homestead. They have lived here ever since. In Germany Mr. Poser was a cabinet maker, a profession which he has only followed as a hobby after turning his efforts to farming and agriculture.

The Posers are the parents of ten children, all of whom are living.

Death claimed one of Homestead township’s oldest residents when Mr. August Poser passed away at his home last Friday.

August Leopold Carl Poser was born in Kromfeld Deering, Germany on June 7, 1857 and at his death had reached the advanced age of 88 years on his last birthday. He was married in Leipzig, Germany to Miss Agnes Keller on February 15, 1879 and shortly after came to America, settling first in Sheboygen and Milwaukee, Wis., where they resided for four years. Following that they moved westward to this community and filed a homestead.

Mr. Poser had followed the trade of cabinet maker in Germany and kept it up for a time after his arrival in this country. In later years he only regarded it as a hobby, turning his main interests to farming and agriculture.

Mr. and Mrs. Poser were the parents of ten children, of whom two, Herbert and Hattie, have preceded their father in death. Left to mourn with Mrs. Poser are Arno at N.Y. Mills, Walter in California, Frank at N.Y. Mills, Martha (Mrs. Paul Wendt) and Agnes (Mrs. Robert Wendt) both in Saskatchewan, Canada, Minnie Gaenzel in St. Paul, Lizzie at home and Elsie (Mrs. Nels Shield) at N.Y. Mills. Also surviving are 36 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren besides many other more distant relatives.

Last rites were conducted Wednesday afternoon at the Congregation Church with the Rev. T. Meckel of Wadena officiating. Three duets “Softly and Tenderly,” “The Lord is My Shepherd” and “Rock of Ages,” were sung by Mrs. Verner Porkkonen and Miss Ruth Aho with Mrs. Ernest Laurila accompanying. Serving as pallbearers were Clark Rand, Adolph Mueller, Chas. Maatta, Frank Maasch, Hugo Hammer and L.H. Rhinehart. Interment took place in Greenwood Cemetery with the Kampsula Funeral Home in charge.
