Composer, Publisher. Along with William Billings and Oliver Holden, he was one of the prominent early American religious music composers. Orphaned by the time he was fifteen, he settled in Newbury, Vermont, where he farmed, operated a tavern, taught singing, and was a deacon and chorister in the local Congregational Church. In 1805 he published his songbook "Christian Harmony" or "Songster's Companion, which contained many folk and popular melodies set to hymns and spiritual songs that were sung in early religious revivals and camp meetings, some of which were incorporated into the later publications of Sacred Harp songbooks (e.g. William Walker's "Southern Harmony" (1835) and "Christian Harmony" (1867) and "The Sacred Harp" (1844) published by Benjamin White and Elisha James). In 1810 he was dismissed from the Congregational Church for marriage infidelity. He then moved his family to a farm near Hancock, Vermont, where he continued his musical activities until he died.
