Roswell Fenner Cottrell was the son of John Cottrell 1774 and Mary Polly Stillman.
His parents lived in Brookfield, Madison County, New York. In about 1833 Roswell moved to Erie County, New York. His parents and his brother Solomon and his family moved to Newstead, Erie County about 1837.
Roswell married Catherine M Harvey, the daughter of Caleb Harvey and Deliah Cook, on March 17,1835 in Mill Grove, Erie, New York. The couple lived in Mill Grove where Roswell taught in the public schools.
In 1851, Rosswell joined the Seventh Day Adventist Church and became a minister for the church. Rosswell's Father John had been associated with the Seventh Day Baptist Church in Rhode Island, and with the Seventh Day Christian Church in Brookfield, Madison, County, New York. The couple also lived for a time in Newfane, Niagara County, New York, and later moved to Ridgeway, Orleans County, New York by 1880.
The couple had four children:
Willet Stillman 1835-1862, married Prudence West Gardner, lived in Winnebago, Wisconsin, died in the Civil War, five children.
Thomas Frank 1839.
Nancy M 1845, married William Buckland, lived in Newfane and Lockport, Niagara County, two children.
James 1847, married Lucy T Taylor, lived in Ridgeway, Orleans, New York, four children.
