Hawaiian Monarch. Born Kamamalu Kalani-Kuaana-o-Kamehamalu-Kekuaiwa-o-kalani-Kealii-Hoopili-a-Walu, daughter of Kamehameha the Great and his consort, Kalakua. She married Liholiho, a son of Kamehameha and his consort, Keopuolani and heir to the throne. Two of her husband's five consorts, had seniority, but she became his favored wife. Standing well over six feet tall, she was a striking figure, and it was she Liholiho, serving as King Kamehameha II, chose to accompany him on a state visit to Britain in 1823. The royal party which also included Governor Boki of Oahu, his wife Liliha, and the king's secretary and interpreter, John Rives, sailed November 27 on the English whaling ship 'L'Aigle.' They arrived May, 1824 and, as the first Hawaiians to visit the kingdom, became the darlings of English society. They stayed at Osborne Hotel and visited the theater, sitting in the royal boxes, courtesy of George IV. While awaiting an audience with the English king, however, the delegation fell ill with measles. The Hawaiians had little immunity to the disease and succumbed rapidly. King George sent his personal physician to their aid, but Kamamalu died within days. Apparently overcome with grief and in a weakened condition, Liholiho died less than a week later. King George arranged for a a 46-gun British naval frigate to take the delegation accompanying the royal coffins home.
