Joseph Thomas was a famed traveling preacher. He preached in hundreds of cities east of the Mississippi. He began trotting through the quiet farm communities in New Jersey in the early 1800's. He was known as the White Pilgrim for dressing in all white, right down o white boots and straddling white horse. Some say it was to ward off evil spirits while other say it was to garner attention. He had a reputation of doing drastic things in the name of religion. He died of smallpox. He was originally interred in the Dark of the Moon Cemetery, near the Dark of The Moon Tavern. The church did appreciate their pastor's overzealous piety. They decided that they didn't want to have his contaminated corpse buried beside the upstanding Christian citizens of the area. He was re-interred in the Christian cemetery in 1846. ---Summarized from Weird NJ Magazine, "Your Travel Guide to New Jersey's Local Legends and Best Kept Secrets."
