Charles Heaton Crumley, his wife Susannah Wheeler, and their children left Habersham County, Georgia and moved to Colorado several years after the Civil War, which had left so much devastation in Georgia. They were part of a group called "The Georgia Colonizers," pioneers who moved from the state of Georgia to Huerfano County, Colorado. The Crumleys homesteaded land several miles west of La Veta.
