Hall of Fame Major League Baseball Player. Born in Sylvan Lake, New York, he was a first baseman making his debut with the Troy Trojans on June 23, 1879 and is considered to be the first great slugger in baseball. For nineteen seasons, he played with the Troy Trojans (1879-80), Buffalo Bisons (1881-85), Detroit Wolverines (1886-88), Boston Beaneaters in 1889, Boston Reds (1890-91), Brooklyn Grooms (1892-93), Baltimore Orioles in 1894, Louisville Colonels in 1895, Philadelphia Phillies in 1896 and New York Giants in 1904. He ended his career with five batting titles, more than any other 19th century player, 2,349 hits, 1,507 runs scored, 106 home runs, 1,296 runs batted in and his lifetime batting average of .349 ranks in the all-time top 10. Following his big league career, he starred in the Minor Leagues, hitting a league leading .373 as a 46-year old first baseman with Poughkeepsie of the Hudson River League. He died from a heart attack at age 74 at his home in East Orange, New Jersey and was posthumously inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1945.
