Bernard Henrich Uhling was the son of Joan Bernhard Uhling and Anna Margaretha Gertrud Elfering. He was born at Wessum, North-Rhine-Westphalia,Germany on 12 April 1841. Bernard was baptized at Sankt Martin Church in Wessum, Germany on 13 April 1841. In the 1860 United States population census for Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, USA, Bernard Uhling is listed as a 19 year old peddler born in Prussia. On 19 June 1861, Bernard Uhling joined Company C of the Sixth Ohio Volunteer Infantry at Camp Dennison, Ohio for a 3 year enlistment. He participated in several major battles including Perryville, Kentucky and Stone River. On 6 June 1864, the unit was ordered to the rear for muster out due to the end of the 3 year enlistment. On 5 October 1869, Bernard Uhling married Bernardina Hoffman at Saint Antonius Catholic Church in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, USA. Bernard was the owner of a beer and wine saloon and boarding house at 30-32 Budd Street in Cincinnati. He died on 27 February 1886 at his residence in Cincinnati. The cause of death was suicide by hanging while laboring under a temporary aberation of the mind. The death certificate states that this was due to financial difficulties. Bernard Uhling was laid to rest in unblessed ground, due to suicide, at Saint Joseph Old Cemnetery in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio on 1 March 1886. He is buried in the "Old Singles" section in an unknown and unmarked grave.
