Richard Cruz was a graduate of Cathedral High School. He also studied at Cal State Los Angeles, and then at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles. He helped to found Catolicos por la Raza, and he clashed with Cardinal James Francis McIntyre over his perception that the Church had not done enough for the Latino community. He later became a civil rights attorney. His papers are housed at UC Santa Barbara.
