Emigrated from Düsseldorf to Ottawa, Canada in 1865/6, where he worked as an accountant for a lumber company. After seven years he moved his family (four children at the time) to Cleveland, Ohio where he edited a German newspaper. While living in Canada, became a citizen of the United Kingdom.

Helped build the Catholic Church in Mandan, North Dakota. Spoke 14 languages according to some sources.

Filed papers to become a US citizen in Morton Co., ND, 25 Mar 1890. Obtained US Citizenship in 1890. First field officer of the North Dakota State Historical Society. Many of his artifacts are on exhibit in a museum in Bismark, North Dakota.
