Minna A. Stein's cremated remains were not initially taken after her death and were available at Oregon State Hospital to be claimed by anyone who is related. In 2022 a relative received the ashes.

Minna (sometimes spelled Mina) was born in Germany in 1879. Her parents were also native of Germany. Her father, Gottlieb Stein, was born in 1830. Her mother, Mathilde Pfefferkorn, was born in 1835. They were married about 1860.

Minna's mother had 8 children (all born in Germany) with all being alive in 1910. Minna's siblings included: Carolina/Karolena, Marie Christine (born in 1861), Richard Henry (1863), Ernst (1864), Carl C. (1868), Hartman H. (1874), and Mathilde Henriette "Tillie" (1877).

Sister Carolina (Stein) Rauchmaul stayed in Germany while the rest of Minna's family systematically moved to the US. Minna's brother Carl immigrated in 1885, followed by sister Marie in 1888. Brother Hartman immigrated in 1890. Minna moved to the US with her parents in 1892. Brother Richard entered the states the following year. While many German immigrants often settled first in eastern or midwest states, Minna's parents moved directly to Portland, Oregon.

At the time of the 1900 census, Minna's parents and siblings were living in Portland in the home of her brother Carl, a baker. Minna was not with them. She was living at a different Portland address (231 Seventh St) where she was working as a cook and domestic. Her parents did not speak English, although the others in the family had become bilingual. Her parents were not working, but the others were employed in the bakery Carl established in 1888, Stein's Bakery which specialized in rye, pumpernickel, and cracked wheat bread. Sister Mathilde was a salesperson; Richard was a driver; Hartman and Carl were bakers.

On 6/9/1909 while crossing a street in Portland, Minna's father collapsed and died of heart failure. He was buried at River View Cemetery in Portland.

During the 1910 census, Minna was working as a salesperson for the bakery while living in Portland with her widowed mother, her sister Marie who was maintaining the home, and brothers Richard, Carl and Hartman who were all working in the bakery. At that time, Ernst was living elsewhere in Portland with his wife Kate Meier, while Mathilde and her husband Fred Schuelein were briefly living in Spokane, Washington.

Over the next decade the family experience several tragic losses. On 2/27/1914 Minna's brother Ernst, a 49 year old building contractor, committed suicide by slitting his throat at his home while taking a bath. A newspaper article reported he was "suffering from nervous trouble… as a result of overwork." In Portland on 6/11/1914 Minna's mother died of a stroke complicated by a broken hip. She was buried with her husband at River View. Brother Hartman died on peritonitis due to colon cancer ion 9/27/1922. He was married, but had no children.

In the 1920 census, Minna who was still working as a salesperson in her brothers' bakery, was living at 3524 SE 73rd St. in Portland with her sister Marie who was not employed outside the home. Both women were single all their lives.

On 3/12/1924, when Minna was about 44, she was admitted to the Oregon State Hospital, a residential facility in Salem, Oregon for the treatment of people with mental illness. She was listed among the patients at the state hospital on the censuses of 1930 & 1940. While she was institutionalized she lost her brother Richard, a cake baker who was single all his life. He died of colorectal cancer on 9/4/1930 in Portland. After being a patient at the institution for almost 18 years Minna died there on 2/13/1942. The cause of death was lung congestion. She was about 63 years old. She was survived by at least three siblings.

Her sister Carolina(Stein) Rauchmaul was in Germany in 1922, but died before 1945. Nothing more is know of what became of her. Carl married Ida Katrina Wehner. He died of heart problem in his Portland home in 1945. He was survived by his wife and 5 children. Marie Stein died in Portland in 1952 of "senility" complicated by hip fractures. Mathilde married Fred Schuelein. They had two children. Mathilde died of cancer on 4/2/1963. Most family members were buried at River View Cemetery in Portland, but some were entombed at the nearby Riverview Abbey Mausoleum. In 1964 Stein's Bakery was acquired by Oroweat Bakers, Inc.
