Mr. Rippen's health began to fail about two years ago, and he had been critically ill in the hospital since August 21.
A son of Gerhard and Margaret Rippen, Henry Rippen was born at Hallam, Lancaster County, Nebraska on August 20, 1879. He was baptized in the Lutheran church and confirmed in the Congregational church at the age of 16.
All of his boyhood days were spent at Hallam, and it was there that he was united in marriage with Carrie Schneider on April 7, 1904. They were the parents of eight children, one of whom, Irvin, preceded his father in death.
In 1926 Mr. Rippen and his family moved from Lancaster county to the Culbertson community and located on the farm five miles southeast of town, which has since remained their home. Much of their farmland was damaged in the big Republican River flood of 1935, and members of the family had harrowing experiences in escaping death in that catastrophe.
Funeral services held here Monday afternoon in the Evangelical U.B. church were conducted by the pastor, Rev. Martin G. Braun, who also officiated at the interment in the Culbertson cemetery.
During the church service, Mrs. George Gerlach and Mrs. Wilbert Wagner sang "Sometime We'll Understand" and "Jesus, Lover of my Soul," with piano accompaniment by Mrs. Dorsey Lehman.
The pallbearers were Reuben Wacker, Joe Kautz, Carl Frick, John Huck, Harold Steinke, and Walter Bauer.
Mr. Rippen is survived by his wife, Carrie, five sons and two daughters, all of whom are residents of the Culbertson community. The sons are Willard, Alfred, Leland, Harlan, and Gordon. The daughters are Mrs. Blanch Brown and Mrs. Merylin Fassler. There are also seven grandchildren, two brothers, John Rippen and William Rippen, both of Hallam, Nebraska, and one sister, Mrs. Lena Burk of Lincoln, who mourn his passing.
