Brun, Johan Nordahl (1745-1816)
Biskop og dikter. Født på Byneset utenfor Trondhjem. Dimmitert fra katedralskolen i Trondhjem under Gerhard Schøning i 1763. Teologisk eksamen 1767. Sekretær i vitenskapsselskapet i Trondheim. Som amanuensis fulgte han med biskop Gunnerus til København i 1771 i forbindelse med dennes oppdrag fra Struensee om å reformere Københavns universitet. I København gjorde han suksess som dramatiker og ble hyllet av de norske studentene for sitt patriotiske og norsk-nasjonale sinnelag. Brun ble utnevnt til kapellan i Byneset i 1772. To år seinere ble han sogneprest ved Korskirken i Bergen. Han ble stiftsprost i 1793 og konstituert biskop i 1797. Fra 1804 til sin død var han biskop i Bergens stift. Som teolog var Brun ortodoks. Han hadde liten sans for samtidens opplysningsteologi. Han var en kraftfull taler og forkynner. Hans vesentligste litterære produksjon omfatter prækener og salmer. I 1790-årene var han en av landets mest produktive forfattere med prekensamlingen Hellige Taler i to bind som et høydepunkt. Han utga også profane dikt, sanger og skuespill. I skuespillet Republikken paa Øen, som ble oppført i Bergen i 1793, advarer han mot revolusjonssympatien i enkelte litterære kretser i Europa.

As a lecturer he followed with Bishop Gunnerus to Copenhagen in 1771 in connection with his commission from Struensee for reforming the University of Copenhagen. In Copenhagen, he made success as a playwright and was hailed by the Norwegian students for their patriotic and Norwegian national spirit. Brun was appointed chaplain in Byneset in 1772. Two years later he became pastor at Cross Church in Bergen. He was dean staple in 1793 and appointed bishop in 1797. From 1804 until his death he was bishop of Bergen pin. As a theologian Brun was orthodox. He had little sense of the contemporary Enlightenment theology. He was a powerful speaker and preacher. His most important literary production includes prækener and hymns. In 1790 he was one of the most prolific writers of Holy Speeches sermon collection in two volumes as a highlight. He also published many poems, songs and plays. In the play the Republic on the island, which was built in Bergen in 1793, he warns against revolusjonssympatien in certain literary circles in Europe.
