"Tuesday morning at half past six o'clock, Mathias Kopp, one of the oldest residents of Dane County, living in the county for 59 years, died at his home in the village. The past few years he has been ageing and becoming weaker until Tuesday morning, at the age of 87 years, 11 months, and 13 days, he passed away. Mathias Kopp was born October 3, 1825, at Trierer, Germany, and came to America in 1854. In 1859 he was married to Katherine Schmitz and has lived his life in Wisconsin with the exception of 2 years spent in Iowa and Indiana. Mr. Kopp started farming in the Town of Berry, in 1883, then moved to Springfield, where he lived until 1891. Waunakee has been his home ever since. Mr. Kopp was a veteran of two great wars. He fought in the last two years of the American Civil war, enlisting in 1864, in the Richmond 5th, Wisconsin Volunteers, C.F. being honorably discharged at the end of the war. He fought in the battle of Gettysburg, being injured in his leg and shoulder in this great battle, and was also a soldier under the great Von Molke in the Seven Week's Prussian War against Austria when the Hohenzollerns wrenched the leadership of the German states from the Hapsburgs in a short but bloody struggle. He was highly respected by his fellow citizens, and loved by every one who knew him. He leaves to mourn his loss, his beloved wife, who patiently cared for him to the very last, two sons and three daughters: Nicholas of this village, Frank, Mrs. J. Meier and Miss Barbara of Madison, and Mrs. Arnold Uebersetzig of Cross Plains. He was preceded in death by three of his sons. There are twenty four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. The funeral was held from the house at 9 o'clock and from St. John's church at 9:30 o'clock this morning, Rev. Father B.A. Seipker officiating. Internment was made in St. John's cemetery. The pall bearers were six grandchildren, namely Messrs. John and Nicholas Jr. Kopp of this village, Frank and Albert Meier and Matt Kopp of Madison and Joseph Kopp of Beloit, Wisconsin."
