Helen Minnie was the first born child of Lucien & Mary Smith. Her father was a toll gate keeper. He gave his bride, Mary the Lace House, a lovely historic home in Blackhawk, CO as a wedding gift. They married Jan. 24, 1863 in Denver.

Helen married William R. Rust in Denver on Aug. 28, 1884. He had come to Blackhawk from Pennsylvania to be a machinist involved with the large mining trade.

The couple had one son, Howard, on April 10, 1886 in Blackhawk. The small family, along with her parents and sister, moved to Tacoma, WA in 1889. William bought a copper smelter and grew it into a gigantic industrial operation. When he sold it in 1905 he was a very wealthy man.

They bought a lovely, huge home in Tacoma. They also has a 2nd son, Henry Arthur, in 1900. Life was good. However, while vacationing in Europe, the couple heard their 1st son, Howard, had died at their home. After that, Helen couldn’t stay in the house & they moved to a smaller home.

William died in 1928 and Helen in 1937
