Theological Professor and President of Andover Theological Seminary. His parents were Eliakim Phelps, pastor, and Sarah Adams. He was the author of "The Still Hour" and many other Christian works. Professor of Sacred Rhetoric at Andover. Pastor of the Pine Street Church, at Boston.
He married his first wife, author of girls books, Elizabeth Stuart, of Boston (b. 1815) in Autumn of the year 1842 while pastor at the Pine Street (Congregational) Church in Boston, marriage intent previously announced at Andover, Massachusetts on August 10, 1842. Her father was Moses Stuart, president of Andover Theological Seminary, and she was eldest his daughter. He and Elizabeth Stuart had three children, Mary Gray (b. 1844), Moses Stuart (b. 1849), and Amos Lawrence (b. 1852). They moved up to Andover, Essex County, Massachusetts from Boston in the year 1848. Elizabeth died in 1852.
His second wife Mary Stuart (b. 1822), Elizabeth's sister died eighteen months after their marriage. They had been married in the year 1854. His third wife, Mary Ann Johnson, bore him two more children, Lawrence and Francis. They were married in Boston, Massachusetts on June 10, 1858. A resident of Andover, Massachusetts at the time, he died of heart failure in Bar Harbor, Maine.
