Ben came to Canada from Germany in 1928, and soon settled in the province of Saskatchewan. He married Elizabeth Mehr in the mid-1930s, and the two began a family that included four children (son Arnold passed away as a child) as well as occasionally caring for Lizzie's brother and sisters after the death of her mother in 1937 (at different times both Gabe and Irene Mehr had lived with the family). After many years in Saskatchewan, Ben and Lizzie moved to the Fraser Valley of British Columbia with their family, and Ben passed away in 1981 in New Westminster, British Columbia.
