Poet, author, and artist. Celia Thaxter's family ran the Appledore Hotel on the Isles of Shoals, off the coast of New England. The Isles of Shoals inspired much of her poetry and prose. One of her earliest poems, "Sandpiper," was included in children's anthologies well into the 20th century. Thaxter also wrote numerous articles for the Atlantic Monthly. Thaxter's book "Among the Isles of Shoals," published in 1873, covered the history and culture of the islands with a vivid eye for color and detail. Thaxter's garden was a popular subject for visiting artists. Impressionist Childe Hassam featured Thaxter and her garden in several of his works. Her book "An Island Garden" helped spark interest in a uniquely American style of gardening. A strong love of nature led to her involvement in the Audubon Society, where she campaigned for a stop to the usage of birds' wings in the elaborate women's hats of the late 19th century. Her fame led to friendships with a number of late 19th century celebrities, including John Greenleaf Whittier, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Childe Hassam, and Sarah Orne Jewett. Celia died suddenly in 1894. Her family's hotel, including her cottage, burned down in 1914. Today, the island is owned by the Star Island Corporation and hosts the Shoals Marine Lab. Her famous garden has been recreated by volunteers.
