Poet. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Frances Locke was raised in Hingham, Massachusetts. After her marriage to painter Samuel Stillman Osgood, the couple moved to England in 1836, where she began publishing her poetry. Soon after their return to the United States in 1839, she became one of the most well-known women writers in the middle of the 19th-century, sometimes using pseudonyms "Violet Vane" and "Kate Carol." Despite her marriage, Mrs. Osgood began a public flirtation with writer Edgar Allan Poe. The two published valentine poems to one another. A scandal erupted that included other women writers and Poe's enemy Rufus Wilmot Griswold before Osgood reconciled with her husband.
