He was a scout for the Detroit Tigers, St. Louis Cardinals and the Montreal Expos. He also played for the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team from 1943-1946.
DAVIS, LORENZO "PIPER", age 79, of Birmingham, Alabama, died Wednesday, May 21st, 1997. Funeral service will be held Saturday @ 12:00 Noon at Sardis Baptist Church. Burial in Elmwood Cemetery. Known as the "Baron" of Birmingham Baseball, he began his professional career in the Industrial League of the City of Birmingham. He played for the Birmingham Black Barons and the Harlem Globetrotters Basketball Team. He was the first Black signed by the Boston Red Sox and was a major league scout for many years. He was preceded in death by his son, Lorenzo Daivs, Jr. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Laura Perry Davis; daughter, Faye Joyce Davis; four grandchildren; four great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Friends of Rickwood. Davenport-Harris Funeral Home has been entrusted with final arrangements. (submitted by contributor K)
