MSG Herbert Gerhard Janssen (USA Retired), age 89, of Edgewood, MD, passed away on July 7, 2012 at Rock Spring Village in Forest Hill, MD. Born in Oldenburg, Germany, he was the son of the late Edward Herman and Gesina Pryet Janssen and husband of the late Ruth M. Walsh Janssen. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served our country during WWII in the 339th Infantry Regiment (Polar Bears Unit) and also in the Korean War. He retired as a machinist from Edgewood Arsenal after 20 years of service and was a member of the Edgewood American Legion, Abingdon VFW, Bel Air Purple Heart, Polar Bear Association of WWII and the DAV At-Large Chapter.

MSG Janssen is survived by his son, Edward A. Janssen and wife, Elise, of Clifton Park, NY; daughters, Janice J. Orecchia and husband, Robert, of Huntington, NY and Karen A. Janssen of Forest Hill, MD; brother, Edward C. Janssen of East Meadow, NY; grandchildren, David and Megan Orecchia, Scott, Sarah and Patrick Janssen, and Kelly Connors; great-grandchildren, Brian, Bella and Bailey Connors and Sean and Cole Supko; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by his brother, Henry G. Janssen; sisters, Hilda M. Janssen and Ella Duhnoski; and grandchildren, Kevin Myrick and Sean Supko.
