On 31 Jan 1881, the Board of Trustees of the Trinity Lutheran Church Congregation, represented by William Kersten and Herman Scriebler purchased 0.81 acres, more or less, as a site for the Church Cemetery located in the 600 Block of Sawyer and was known for many years as the German Lutheran Cemetery. It is located about 1-mile west of the present church campus at 800 Houston Avenue at Washington Avenue.
After the purchase, the land had to be cleared and plotted into burial spaces and lots. On 24 July 1881, the cemetery was formally dedicated. Headstones reveal some dates of death occurred prior to 1881, but it is believed the by the Church Sexton, that these individuals were moved from other locations and interred at the new cemetery.
