When the third ambassador of the Osmanian Empire at the Prussian court died in 1798 he could not be buried in a Christian grave yard. King Friedrich Wilhelm II. of Prussia gave a parcel of land to the Turkish soldiers of his regiment and asked for them to create a Muslim cemetery on it. Thus the reason for the first Turkish-Muslim cemetery in Germany. The original location near the Blücherstrasse/Urbanstrasse (called Metzgerwiese) had to be closed in order for new casernes to be built. King Wilhelm I. presented the Turkish government with the gift of a new lot just North of the Tempelhofer Feld, which was opened as a cemetery in 1863. Many graves were moved to the new site. In 1921/22 a small house of worship was erected and the Muslim preacher and caretaker of the cemetery Hafýz Sükrü Bey built a small dwelling on the grounds of the grave yard as well. In 1963 the cemetery was enlarged to its current size of 2429 square meters (0.6 acres). This small cemetery is filled to capacity. It borders the Friedhof am Columbiadamm.
Though Turkish and Muslim families have been able to bury their dead in non-denominational cemeteries for decades now, a new Turkish cemetery had been established in Berlin-Gatow.
The Sehitlik mosque was finished in 1999 and is now one of the largest of its kind in Germany.
