Saint Paul Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery ("Evangelisch-lutherische St. Paulus Gottesacker") was established in 1884 to serve the interment needs of the members of the newly-formed German Lutheran congregation which met in the area, along with the needs of their neighbors. The land for the cemetery and for what had been hoped to be the eventual building of a church had been donated by Heinrich & Anna Schmidt, charter members of the congregation.
The cemetery continued to be used until the early 1900's, at which point the congregation chose to construct their first church building in the neighboring village of Scotia and to rename themselves Zion Lutheran Church ("Evangelisch-lutherische Zion Gemeinde"). Many of the original graves were then moved to Mt. Hope Cemetery in Scotia, although a few remain to this day, preserved and maintained by the congregation, which still owns the property.
