Greifswalder Chaussee
Stralsund
Originally not allowed to bury their dead within the city walls, the Jewish Congregation of Stralsund was finally allowed to purchase a parcel and opened its first Jewish Cemetery in 1850. In 1912 the grave yard was enlarged. When the Nazi-regime took power the Jewish Congregation was dissolved by 1938, in 1942 the area was sold to a German developer. The cemetery then was neglected for about a decade. In 1950 the city of Stralsund changed the property's status to that of a memorial. In 1997 the cemetery was then transferred back to the Jewish Congregation of the State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Between 2000-2008 it was cleaned up and is now being used as a memorial site. Since 1942 no further burials have been taken place.
Members of the Wertheim family are buried in this cemetery. Wertheim was one of the first department store chains in Germany, which still exists.
