The first Jewish cemetery in Bad Salzuflen was probably established in the middle of the 16th century, it was first documented officially in 1607 and in use for the next 300 years.
During the Nazi terror the Jewish synagogue and this cemetery were destroyed and used for other purposes. The property of the former temple was turned into a parking lot, a large portion of the former cemetery was used by a local construction company as a storage place for their heavy equipment.
Some two dozen stones that survived the Nazis and World War II were kept in a corner of the former cemetery. It wasn't until 1988 that the city of Bad Salzuflen reclaimed the cemetery and dedicated this property to be a memorial against the Nazi terror and the Holocaust. 24 historical grave stones and a memorial monument is all that remains of this almost 4 century old cemetery.
