In 1879 Hugh Wilson bought Caesar's farm, however, it wasn't until 1960 when Hugh Michael Wilson discovered that the cemetery land had not been severed from the Caesar property!
Records show a roughcast church building was erected in 1820 by Mr James Caesar and trustees, thus providing a possible date for the establishment of the cemetery. When the first church burned down it was replaced by a brick church at the corner of the 4th Line and 32nd Sideroad, but the original burying grounds remained and have always been known as Caesar's Cemetery.
It is also recorded in local documents that in 1927 the unkempt condition of Caesar's Cemetery became a discussion topic at meetings of the Mono Road Women's Institute. The women created a committee to clean up the cemetery and with the assistance of Robert Mansfield of Kilmanagh (who was paid $1.00 per rod to clear the debris) the task was completed.
Through euchre parties and other ventures, the local Women's Institute raised funds to create a "Perpetual Care" fund for the cemetery. On January 27, 1975 these funds were transferred to the Town of Caledon to create a Special Trust Fund for Caesar Cemetery with the agreement that the Town of Caledon would assume the future care of the cemetery.
Caesar's Cemetery was established as a free burying ground (only grave fees were charged) and its continued maintenance is a tribute to the untiring efforts of the community and the Mono Road Women's Institute! And although the cemetery officially closed in 1961 (when no more land was available), there have been a few burials since that date of family members who already had purchased plots.
