Since the mid-1200's there had been a Jewish community in Rostock and in 1279 it asked for the permission to establish a cemetery. The permission was granted but there are no remains of this first Jewish cemetery in Rostock today.
In 1868 a new Jewish community settled in Rostock and a new cemetery became necessary. This new Jewish cemetery was established on 3500 m² belonging to the south east corner of the then Christian cemetery which is nowadays the Lindenpark in Rostock. In 1873 the first funeral took place and until 1942 more than 360 persons have been buried.
In 1963 a memorial was erected, in 1978 the remaining gravestones were laid on the ground and in 1988 the gravestones were erected again and a new memorial was dedicated, respectively. Today (2018) there are still 182 burial sites present, whereas only 176 gravestones exist, 29 of those laying on the floor. The Jewish Cemetery is part of the cultural heritage management of Rostock.
The current Jewish community in Rostock uses a part of the Westfriedhof in Rostock for burials.
