This is the second of Hamilton's two original burying grounds. This cemetery was located in Hamilton's west side once known as Rossville before becoming incorporated into the City of Hamilton. Burials that were originally interred here have been removed to Greenwood Cemetery. This early burial site is now Sutherland Park Playground. Early pioneer families such as the Sutherland, Millikin and Falconer families were first buried here. The Park was named for John Sutherland who was a proprietor and one of Hamilton's earliest settlers.
Inscription:
Sutherland Park
Pioneer Burial Ground 1804
"Stranger, pause as you pass by
as you are now, so once was I
as I am now, so you must be
prepare for death and follow me."
"And God Shall Wipe Away All Tears"
These were popular epitaphs carved on many of the stones of this Pioneer Graveyard. This area was dedicated as a burial ground in 1804. Because of deterioration, many bodies were removed to the new Greenwood Cemetery. It was then that this area became a park. In 1890, the park was named in Honor of John Sutherland (1771-1834) an early proprietor and one of Hamilton's earliest settlers.
