This small cemetery surrounds the St. Nicholas Kirche (built in 1327) in the small village of Werdum.

Please note that the graves in Germany are not perpetual. After a certain period of repose (20-30 years) the graves are being leveled and re-used. There is no toxic embalming being done in Germany, so the coffin and the corpse can decompose naturally. If the family of the deceased decides to purchase another period the duration can be extended by another 30 years. Otherwise the grave will be leveled and reused, the marker than used as gravel in road construction. War Graves are considered memorials and are kept up by the owner of the cemetery. Those are kept forever. Also the town or owner of the cemetery might find a grave of historical significance and will protect and keep it.

The cemetery has a War Memorial with the names and sometimes dates of soldiers from this town, who died during the wars of the past two centuries. Most of them are missing in action and their bodies have never been found and returned to their families. They are not buried here, but remembered on these war memorial plaques and monuments.

Naming convention: With its proximity to the Netherlands, pay attention to the spelling of the last names: "VAN" and "VON" is often interchangeable. Names are listed as they appear on the stone. Also search with and without space after the "van/von", "de", "ter" and "zur". In addition, the old German character "ß" is often changed to "ss" in modern spelling. Please search for both variations.
